Cambridge driver gets one year in jail for killing cyclist John Corcoran

A driver who struck and killed cyclist John Corcoran on Memorial Drive in Cambridge in 2024 pleaded guilty to motor vehicle homicide Thursday and was sentenced to a term that includes one year in jail.

Junming Zhu, 28, was driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV that prosecutors said left the busy roadway and hit Corcoran as he rode an electric bicycle on a sidewalk near the Boston University boathouse.

In Cambridge District Court, Zhu received a two-and-a-half-year sentence, with one year to be served and the rest suspended for two-and-a-half years after his release. His driver’s license was revoked for 15 years.

The case brought renewed attention to the dangers faced by cyclists and has been a source of grief and a catalyst for protest in the Boston-area cycling community.
