Boston school security official pleads not guilty in Martha’s Vineyard rape case
Edward J. Brown, a Boston Public Schools assistant security director, was arrested at Boston Latin Academy and charged in connection with an alleged rape at an Oak Bluffs State Police barracks. He pleaded not guilty, and a judge set bail at $10,000.
A Boston Public Schools assistant security director has pleaded not guilty to a rape charge stemming from an alleged assault at a Massachusetts State Police barracks on Martha’s Vineyard.
Edward J. Brown was arrested at Boston Latin Academy, where he works, and charged with one count of rape. Prosecutors say the alleged assault occurred Aug. 15 at the Oak Bluffs barracks, after a state trooper allowed Brown, a college friend, to stay there overnight.
At a court hearing Tuesday in Dukes County, Assistant District Attorney Courtney Scalice said the woman told investigators that a man bought her a drink at The Ritz bar and followed her there. She later woke up naked and face down in bed, prosecutors said, and reported that Brown was forcing himself on her. Police said a passing motorist found her naked outside the barracks and took her to a hospital.
Brown’s attorney, Anthony Ellison, said his client is presumed innocent. Ellison also pointed to a police affidavit in which the woman said she did not want to pursue charges.
The school district said Brown had worked for Boston Public Schools for two years, earned more than $117,000 annually and had passed required background checks. The district said his role did not involve direct contact with students and that he was placed on administrative leave after his arrest. The district added that law enforcement had said the charges do not involve BPS students and that it would cooperate with the investigation.
Scalice told the judge that two former girlfriends obtained restraining orders against Brown earlier this year. Bail was set at $10,000. Brown is scheduled to return to court in December.
