Braintree breaks ground on Logan Express garages, future airport screening terminal

Two new parking garages are planned at Braintree’s Logan Express site, including space for a remote terminal where passengers can clear security before traveling to Logan Airport. The project is expected to take a few years to open, and its garages will provide more than 5,500 parking spaces.

Braintree breaks ground on Logan Express garages, future airport screening terminal

Construction is underway on two parking garages at the Braintree Logan Express site, one of which will include a remote terminal where travelers can pass through airport security before boarding a bus to Logan Airport.

Groundbreaking took place Tuesday. The garages are planned to have more than 5,500 spaces combined, though officials have not given an opening date for the terminal. The project is expected to take a few years to complete.

The Braintree facility will combine a Logan Express service with remote-terminal screening. Passengers will check in and clear Transportation Security Administration screening with their luggage before boarding a secure bus that takes them past Logan’s security checkpoint. Tickets are expected to cost $9 each way.

The plan expands on a pilot remote terminal in Framingham, which began in June. More than 22,000 passengers had used that service by Oct. 14, according to state officials. The Framingham pilot is scheduled to continue through at least March 2027.

The service is currently available to passengers flying on JetBlue and Delta. Massport has said it plans to add other airlines.

Gov. Maura Healey said the Braintree terminal would bring the Framingham approach to the South Shore and offer travelers another way to reach Logan. She also said the project would support thousands of construction jobs and strengthen the state’s economy.

Massport CEO Rich Davey said in July that Logan Express locations in Woburn and Danvers could be considered for future remote terminals. Back Bay and the Seaport have also been discussed as possible locations.
