UMD suspends entire club tennis team after racist images circulated by email
The University of Maryland has suspended its club tennis team indefinitely while its Office of Student Conduct investigates emails containing racist imagery targeting Black people. The team forfeited matches in a fall tournament hosted at College Park, though the event continued as scheduled.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The University of Maryland suspended its club tennis team indefinitely after learning that some members sent emails containing racist imagery to other university tennis clubs ahead of a fall tournament at College Park.
University officials learned of the messages Saturday, Oct. 10, and said the emails included programming material with a graphic targeting people who are Black or African American. The matter has been referred to the university’s police department, and the Office of Student Conduct is investigating.
Although the emails were sent by some team members, the university suspended the entire club pending the investigation. The team forfeited its tournament matches; the competition went ahead as planned.
An apology email sent to the other teams said the university was horrified by the incident and expressed regret and a sincere apology for the harm caused.
The university has not announced a timeline for the investigation or said what disciplinary measures could follow. The suspension leaves the club’s status unresolved while the school examines the conduct of its members.
