Baltimore suspect held without bond after teen’s escape from alleged basement assault

A Baltimore judge ordered Abubakarr Barrie held without bond Monday after prosecutors accused him of kidnapping and attacking a 15-year-old girl at a home on Garrison Boulevard.

Charging documents say the girl accepted a ride from Barrie on Thursday through an informal, unlicensed rideshare arrangement sometimes called a “hack.” She told police he drove away from the restaurant she was trying to reach, then took her to his home and forced her into the basement.

The girl said Barrie stabbed her and began removing her clothes, according to the documents. She fought back with a fire extinguisher and escaped, then went door to door in a nearby neighborhood until someone helped her on Belle Avenue, about a five-minute walk away. Police arrived soon afterward.

The girl was hospitalized with injuries that included a collapsed lung, according to the report. Her condition beyond that was not provided.

Investigators said she gave them Barrie’s Cash App information and identified his car. Her phone’s Find My iPhone feature also placed it at his home, the documents say. Police arrested Barrie Saturday.

Barrie, a 23-year-old full-time Uber Eats driver, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and several other offenses. The public defender’s office told the court he had no criminal history and had lived at the Garrison Boulevard home for about a month. The charges are allegations, and Barrie is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Neighbors said they did not know Barrie. “My oldest daughter is 15 right now and everything, so that hit home,” neighbor Larry Lonax said. Another neighbor, Christian Robinson, called the alleged attack “absurd” and said the person responsible should serve time.
