Trump to campaign for Paxton in San Antonio without Abbott

Gov. Greg Abbott says previously scheduled events will keep him from joining President Donald Trump at Wednesday’s San Antonio rally. Trump is visiting Texas to support Attorney General Ken Paxton in a closely watched Senate race, as Abbott faces a competitive reelection contest of his own.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will not appear with President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in San Antonio on Wednesday, saying his schedule already includes events elsewhere in the state. Abbott’s campaign confirmed he would miss the rally. At a Houston roundtable with law enforcement on Monday, Abbott said he had events planned for that day and would be unable to attend. He also praised Trump’s ability to energize Republican voters, saying the president does “a good job of getting the base organized and turning out.” Trump is traveling to Texas to campaign for Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running against Democrat James Talarico for a U.S. Senate seat. Republican congressional candidate Carlos De La Cruz, whose district includes parts of San Antonio, is also expected at the event. The visit is Trump’s third trip to Texas in less than a month, underscoring the state’s importance to Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress in November. The rally comes as Abbott and Paxton both face competitive races. Abbott is seeking reelection against Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Recent polling has offered differing snapshots of the governor’s race. A New York Times/Siena University poll conducted last month put Hinojosa four points ahead, while a Fox News poll from the same period showed Abbott leading by five points among registered voters. Asked about the polling Monday, Abbott said he was comfortable with his position based on internal campaign data. Abbott praised the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas in September, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance also appeared. The governor’s absence from Wednesday’s rally follows that public show of support, though he cited scheduling conflicts as the reason he would not attend.
