Taylor to weigh annexation, zoning for 664-acre data center campus
Taylor City Council is scheduled to consider annexation and zoning on Oct. 8 for a proposed 664-acre data center development east of the city, near 3301 Farm to Market Road 112 and about 30 miles northeast of Austin. The project, now called the Taylor Technology Campus, is being proposed by South Dakota-based Big Watt Digital LLC and Virginia-based PowerHouse Data Centers. Plans include data center facilities and on-site power generation. The development was previously known as Project Mustang. Company and city officials say the project could produce $4.8 billion in economic output for Williamson County over the next 20 years. That estimate is a projection; the information available does not specify how much of the projected activity would become local tax revenue or how many permanent jobs the campus would create. The proposal returns to council amid local opposition to data center development. Community members have spoken against proposed facilities and supported an initiative petition; Taylor officials have said the petition cannot be put on the ballot under Texas law. The council’s annexation and zoning consideration will determine whether the project can proceed through those steps.
