A man was shot and seriously injured by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents Sunday afternoon in north Austin, according to Austin city officials. The shooting occurred near the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane, close to U.S. 183. The man was taken to a local hospital and was in serious but stable condition, officials said. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said the Austin Police Department did not participate in the shooting. APD officers assisted with road closures and traffic control, he said. Watson said he was angry that someone acting as a law-enforcement officer shot a person on Austin streets, and he questioned whether an investigation conducted solely by ICE would be sufficiently independent. He and Police Chief Lisa Davis were contacting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Texas Department of Public Safety about Austin’s role in the investigation. Davis has been in contact with the Texas Rangers, and APD and the Rangers agreed to work together on the case, city officials said. Authorities had not publicly released details about what led to the shooting or identified the injured man. As of Sunday evening, closures were reported on the southbound Research Boulevard frontage road and at Anderson Square. The investigation remains ongoing.
