Tesla continued offering rides through its Robotaxi app in Texas after the company’s state license expired in August, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. A ride in one of Tesla’s Cybercab vehicles was booked through the Robotaxi app on Wednesday, Sept. 23, while the company’s Transportation Network Company license remained expired. TNC licenses apply to businesses that connect riders and drivers through an app, including services such as Uber, Lyft and Robotaxi. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees the licenses, said Tesla has submitted a renewal application and that the agency is reviewing it. Because the application was filed after the license expired, Tesla faces $11,250 in renewal and late fees, the agency said. The license is intended to help the state verify that ride-hailing companies maintain required insurance, keep records about rides and drivers, and provide wheelchair-accessible transportation options. “TDLR sends renewal notices … by email and by postcard 60 days before a license expires,” a department spokesperson said. “Late fees apply to renewals submitted after the expiration date.” Tesla had not responded to requests for comment as of Wednesday. The status of the company’s renewal application and whether the Robotaxi service will continue without interruption remain unclear. The licensing lapse comes as Austin and other Texas communities are becoming testing grounds for driverless transportation.
