Central Texas forecast calls for overnight storms, renewed downpours Thursday
A slow-moving storm line could bring heavy rain to the Hill Country overnight, followed by one or two rounds of downpours Thursday. Forecasters warned of flash-flooding and a lower-level severe-weather risk, with isolated rainfall totals potentially reaching 7 inches by Friday night.
Central Texas was forecast to see scattered showers Wednesday evening, Sept. 30, before a slow-moving line of storms moved through the Hill Country overnight and into Thursday, Oct. 1. The storms could bring very heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, large hail or a brief tornado, according to the forecast.
The Storm Prediction Center placed areas along and west of Interstate 35 under a Level 1 out of 5, or “Marginal,” severe-weather risk through early Thursday. The Austin area was under a Level 2 out of 4, or “Slight,” flash-flood risk overnight, while parts of the Hill Country faced a Level 3, or “Moderate,” risk.
Thursday was expected to be the wettest day of the forecast period, with a first round of storms potentially reaching the Austin area from midmorning to midday. Another round could develop Thursday evening and last into early Friday. Most of Central Texas was forecast to remain under a Level 3 out of 4 flash-flood threat Thursday, as slow-moving storms could repeatedly drop heavy rain over the same locations.
Forecast rainfall totals through Friday night were 2 to 4 inches for most areas, with localized amounts as high as 7 inches where storms stalled or passed over repeatedly. The forecast noted that totals would depend partly on storm movement and whether the second round arrives Thursday night.
Rain was expected to ease in intensity Friday, though isolated flooding remained possible. A Pacific cold front arriving Friday was forecast to bring cooler weather, with highs in the 80s and overnight lows in the 60s. Rain chances were expected to decline through the weekend, with mostly dry conditions returning later Sunday and continuing into much of the following week.
