ACL’s 25th year brings two weekends of safety and travel planning in Austin
With the Austin City Limits Music Festival set to draw thousands to Zilker Park for two October weekends, city agencies are urging attendees to prepare for heat, crowds, limited phone service and transportation constraints. The festival’s 25th year runs Oct. 2-4 and Oct. 9-11. Austin officials recommend reviewing the festival’s bag rules, wearing clothing suited to the weather, drinking water regularly and choosing a meeting point with friends in case cell service is unreliable. Austin police will run a No Refusal Initiative from Oct. 3 through Oct. 12, operating nightly from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. The initiative is intended to enforce drunk-driving laws during the festival period. Attendees planning to drink should arrange a sober way home. Police also advise festivalgoers to stay alert and secure phones, wallets and identification. Keeping phones out of back pockets can help deter theft; suspected thefts should be reported to festival security or law enforcement. Austin-Travis County EMS will have medical resources on-site. Attendees who feel ill can seek help at a medical tent, and emergencies should be reported by calling 911. EMS officials also warned of heat-related illness and urged visitors to drink water throughout the event. Driving and parking will be limited: parking will not be available at Zilker Park or in nearby neighborhoods. Transportation officials encourage visitors to consider public transit, festival shuttles, bicycles, rideshare services or walking routes instead.
