Austin Water outlines framework for regulating major water users at Monday open house
Austin Water will present concepts for a policy framework affecting major water users at a public open house Monday, Oct. 5, from about 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 6310 Wilhelmina Delco Drive, Room 1405, in Austin. The department is seeking feedback as it develops rules intended to support long-term water planning and encourage high-impact customers to use water responsibly. The concepts scheduled for discussion include how the city would define high-impact users, review new developments with large water needs, and set water budgets, monitoring and accountability measures. Austin Water’s existing requirements call for developers to pay for and build infrastructure needed to serve their projects. Commercial and multifamily developments must also explain how water will be used on-site. Large developments are additionally required to reuse water on-site or connect to the city’s reclaimed-water system for purposes such as irrigation, toilet flushing and cooling. The proposed framework would build on those practices. The department has not provided specific thresholds or final requirements in the information released ahead of the meeting; Monday’s session is intended to present concepts and collect public input.
