A 23-year-old man faces a third-degree felony charge after Austin police said he assaulted a security officer during an attempted entry into a women’s residence hall at Huston-Tillotson University. Edward Vernon Johnson II was arrested Sept. 6 in connection with the Aug. 1 incident at the historically Black university’s campus at 900 Chicon St., according to court records and the Austin Police Department. He remained booked in the Travis County Jail as of Sept. 17. Police said the incident occurred shortly after midnight, when Johnson allegedly trespassed onto university property. Video described in an arrest-warrant affidavit showed him trying to enter locked campus buildings before fleeing from security and approaching a female dormitory, according to the affidavit. The affidavit said a security officer caught up with Johnson and pulled him away from the dorm. The two fell to the ground, police said, and Johnson then allegedly struck the officer in the face several times with a closed fist. The officer was shown sitting on the ground with his hands raised to protect his face before Johnson fled, according to the affidavit. Austin police said the officer suffered minor injuries. The charge remains an allegation, and a criminal case does not establish guilt. Court records did not indicate whether Johnson had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
