Boston College rallies past Georgia Tech 49-27, tightening Jackets’ bowl path

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech’s bid to keep its bowl hopes alive took a serious hit Saturday as Boston College rallied for a 49-27 win at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets opened with a two-score lead and were still ahead 13-12 at halftime. But Boston College outscored Tech 37-14 after the break, turning a close game into a lopsided loss.

Tech fell to 2-5. To reach bowl eligibility, the team must win four of its final five games.

The loss came after coach Brent Key spent the week stressing consistency, a problem that resurfaced despite the promising start. Tech’s offense struggled to sustain drives, and quarterback Alberto Mendoza threw two interceptions. He completed 24 of 42 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown.

“We’re not playing consistent football,” Key said after the game, according to his remarks during the week. He also said the team needed to respond to swings in momentum and make adjustments.

Georgia Tech’s remaining schedule offers little margin for error, with games against Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Georgia and Clemson still ahead. The Jackets must turn early leads into complete performances if they are to stay in the bowl-eligibility race.
