Trump plans Dalton rally as Georgia early voting begins
Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally in Dalton Friday, days after Georgia’s three-week early-voting period begins. The visit puts a spotlight on Republican governor nominee Rick Jackson’s effort to distinguish himself from the president while energizing the party’s ticket.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally in Dalton at 3 p.m. Friday, as Georgia voters begin casting early ballots in the midterm election.
The event in northwest Georgia, a Republican stronghold, will be Trump’s third visit to the state this year. He previously campaigned in Rome in February and appeared at Wheeler High School in Marietta in July.
U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, is expected to attend. It was not clear whether Jackson, the GOP nominee for governor, or other Republican candidates would join Trump in Dalton.
The rally comes as Jackson seeks to energize Republican voters while presenting himself as willing to chart his own course. That balancing act could shape the governor’s race as voters consider the broader Republican ticket and the president’s influence on Georgia politics.
On Monday, Gov. Brian Kemp and Jackson began a daylong tour around the state, urging Republicans to vote early ahead of the three-week voting period, which starts Tuesday. Their push underscores the importance both parties place on turning out voters early in a closely watched election.
Trump’s visit follows a July appearance in Cobb County where Jackson promoted the president’s support for his gubernatorial campaign. Friday’s rally will offer another opportunity for Republicans to campaign alongside Trump as early voting gets underway.
