Northlake annexation measure would shift local services to Tucker
Residents in a portion of Northlake will decide Nov. 3 whether to join Tucker. Approval would bring municipal services and Tucker election voting rights to the area between Northlake Parkway and LaVista Road.
Residents in a proposed annexation area of Northlake will vote Nov. 3 on whether to become part of the City of Tucker, a change that would shift responsibility for several local services from DeKalb County to the city.
The area, in unincorporated DeKalb County between Northlake Parkway and LaVista Road, includes the Avana City North, Atlas LaVista Hills and Providence of Northlake apartment communities. It also includes businesses such as Marlow’s Tavern, several hotels and part of the former Northlake Mall building.
The measure, authorized by Senate Bill 622, would take effect if more than half of voters in the proposed area approve it. Tucker would then assume municipal responsibilities including street paving, sidewalk repairs, park planning, investment in facilities and enforcement of apartment property-maintenance codes. Residents would also be able to vote in Tucker municipal elections, and the area would be incorporated into the city’s transportation plan.
The bill was sponsored by state Sens. Tonya Anderson, Sally Harrell, Kim Jackson, Elena Parent and Karla Drenner, all Democrats.
If voters reject the proposal, the area will remain unincorporated and under DeKalb County jurisdiction. Early voting is underway through Oct. 30; eligible voters can find election information through the Georgia Secretary of State’s My Voter Page.
