DeKalb case: Clayton County man jailed after wife’s fatal driveway collision
Nelson Clements, 64, faces vehicle homicide, hit-and-run, stalking and concealing a death charges in the June death of his estranged wife, Janice Frazier. Her family says surveillance footage shows what happened after she was struck; Clements’ lawyer maintains the death was accidental.
A 64-year-old Clayton County man is being held in the DeKalb County Jail in connection with the June death of his estranged wife, Janice Frazier, 58, who was struck by a truck he was driving, authorities allege.
Nelson Clements faces charges including homicide by vehicle, hit-and-run, stalking and concealing a death. The arrest came months after Frazier’s death and followed calls from her family for an arrest.
Frazier’s relatives say home surveillance footage shows her trying to stop Clements from driving because they believed he was intoxicated. They allege he drove off and hit her, then later dragged her motionless body inside the home and waited more than an hour before calling police. The family says he did not tell dispatchers that his truck had struck her.
Those accounts have not been established in court. Clements’ attorney, Jackie Patterson, disputes the family’s description and says the death was an accident. Patterson also disputes the claim that Clements was intoxicated, saying police did not ask him to take an alcohol test. He suggested Frazier may have been drinking before she grabbed onto the truck.
Clements told a television reporter before his arrest that the incident was “just a bad situation” and said he loved Frazier. Her relatives say messages, videos and letters they provided document a pattern of stalking in the days before her death. Patterson said he was seeking a bond hearing.
Frazier’s niece, Ashley Black, said the family had lost a great deal and that the circumstances of Frazier’s death were unfair. Her nephew, Chris Frazier, said the family believes the surveillance footage is critical evidence. The allegations will be tested as the case proceeds; Clements’ attorney says accident will remain the defense at trial.
