Hazen Highlanders end football season early, citing player shortages and safety
Renton’s Hazen High School has canceled its remaining football games after injuries, player departures and academic suspensions left too few varsity athletes to compete safely. The school also called off its junior varsity and C-team games.
Hazen High School in Renton has canceled the rest of its 2026 football season, saying injuries, player attrition and academic suspensions left the program without enough available varsity players to compete safely.
The school’s principal, Craig Cooper, notified the school community Oct. 8, according to a report by the Renton Reporter. Hazen did not play its scheduled game against Issaquah on Oct. 9. Its remaining varsity matchups against Eastlake on Oct. 16, Skyline on Oct. 23 and a cross-divisional opponent on Oct. 30 were also called off. Junior varsity and C-team games have been canceled as well.
Cooper said the school was looking into possible games for players still in the program and would share updates if opponents could be arranged. The announcement did not specify how many players were available or identify the affected injuries.
Hazen’s decision follows a similar move at Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way, which recently canceled its final three varsity games amid low participation, inexperience and injuries. The team is instead playing an altered schedule, including junior varsity matchups. R.A. Long High School in Longview also dropped its varsity schedule after injuries at key positions and shifted to junior varsity competition.
Hazen’s cancellation ends the season for a program that had several league dates still on its calendar, while leaving open the possibility of alternate competition for remaining players.
