Two men face murder charges in September killing outside Des Moines bar

Two men have been charged with murder in the Sept. 20 shooting death of Abraham F. Logan in downtown Des Moines, according to King County prosecutors.

Derrick Stell Jr. is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. Keenan Stell is charged with first-degree murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. Both were being held in the King County Jail and were scheduled to appear for arraignment Thursday, when they were expected to enter initial pleas.

Logan, 31, had been out with a family member at an arcade and a bar before the group began walking to their vehicle, charging documents say. Prosecutors allege he spoke up during a fight involving several people outside the All-Star Bar.

Logan’s wife told investigators she heard him warn that someone had a gun. The family then saw him run north from the bar toward an intersection, according to the documents. Two men involved in the argument chased him and shot him, prosecutors allege. Investigators found 11 shell casings.

Court records cited by prosecutors show Derrick Stell Jr. has prior King County felony convictions for a 2017 drive-by shooting, robberies in 2010 and 2017, and second-degree assault in 2013. Keenan Stell has a prior felony conviction for violating a domestic violence court order.

The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
