Three defendants face murder charges in fatal Tacoma garage shooting

An 18-year-old, his 20-year-old brother and a 19-year-old woman pleaded not guilty in the killing of 16-year-old Josiah Midgyett. A judge set bail at $5 million for each brother and $1.5 million for the woman.

Three defendants face murder charges in fatal Tacoma garage shooting

Three people charged in the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Josiah Midgyett appeared in court Wednesday as prosecutors described a possible retaliatory attack at a Tacoma parking garage.

The shooting happened early Sunday at a garage on Commerce Street, where a group had gathered. Court documents say as many as five masked gunmen opened fire. Midgyett was killed, and prosecutors say nine other people were assaulted.

Jose Campos, 18, was charged with first-degree murder, nine counts of assault and firearms offenses. His brother, Davion Campos, 20, and Alina Guillen, 19, were also charged with murder and assault. Not-guilty pleas were entered for all three defendants.

Midgyett’s mother asked the judge not to release the defendants on bail. Prosecutors requested bail of $5 million for each Campos brother and $1.5 million for Guillen; the judge granted those requests.

Prosecutor Lisa Wagner told the court that both brothers are convicted felons and that Jose Campos had been shot in the hand the night before the garage shooting. She pointed to a bandage on his arm, saying investigators believe the attack may have been retaliatory. Wagner also said surveillance video showed him armed and wearing a mask. Those claims are allegations, and the charges have not been proven in court.

Police have not said whether they are looking for additional suspects, despite witness accounts that up to five masked gunmen fired shots. The case concerns a deadly shooting at a gathering in a downtown Tacoma garage, with investigators’ account suggesting more people may have been involved than the three defendants charged so far.
