Sedro-Woolley district halts use of affected student medications during police probe

Sedro-Woolley School District is working with local police after a medication audit uncovered missing student prescriptions and liquid medication that appeared to have been diluted at multiple schools.

The district said in an Oct. 16 statement that staff first found missing medication at one school. A broader review across the district then identified additional discrepancies. Officials have not said how many students or medications were affected, or which schools were involved.

The district has referred the matter to the Sedro-Woolley Police Department. Because the investigation involves confidential student and personnel information, officials said they would not release further details for now.

As a precaution, the district said it is not administering medication from the affected supplies. It has personally contacted families whose students’ medications were identified and will help arrange replacements, covering the replacement costs.

Superintendent Brett Greenwood said the district’s priority is supporting students and families while determining what happened. The district is also reviewing how medications are stored, accessed, inventoried and tracked to identify additional safeguards.

Families concerned about medication kept at school can contact their school principal to arrange a review with school staff, the district said.
