Seattle police investigate fatal shooting of 25-year-old woman on University Way NE as possible domestic violence murder
A 25-year-old woman was killed and a man was critically wounded in a shooting on University Way NE Friday evening that police are investigating as a possible domestic violence murder and attempted suicide. The University District incident prompted a UW alert, but police say there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Seattle police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old woman on University Way NE Friday evening as a possible domestic violence murder and attempted suicide, authorities said.
Officers responded to the scene around 6:42 p.m. after reports of gunfire in the University District block lined with small shops and apartments above. Seattle Fire Department medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene. A man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, according to police.
Investigators believe the man shot the woman before turning the gun on himself a few doors away, police said. They are not searching for any additional suspects, and a University of Washington alert issued after the shooting indicated there was no danger to the public.
Tacee Webb, who works across the street from where the shooting occurred, said she and her staff heard the gunshots and ran outside. She described seeing the man bleeding on the ground for what felt like a minute and began shouting for help, telling bystanders he was still alive and needed CPR.
âIt was difficult to watch. There was just a lot of blood,â Webb said.
The King County Medical Examinerâs Office has not yet released the womanâs name, and police have not identified the man or described their relationship. No charges have been announced.
The shooting adds to a grim tally of gun violence in Seattle and across Washington state. Domestic violence homicides have remained a persistent concern for advocates, who note that firearms are often used in intimate-partner killings and that access to guns can escalate abusive relationships into lethal ones.
Community resources are available for people experiencing domestic violence. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-7233, and the King County Domestic Violence Hopeline is available at 206-737-0242. In an emergency, call 911.
Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Seattle Police Departmentâs violent crimes tip line at 206-233-5000.
