Helicopter Crashes at Orting Tree Farm, Pilot Hospitalized with Moderate Injuries

A helicopter pilot was hospitalized Saturday morning after his aircraft went down in a parking lot near a tree farm in the Orting area, according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.

Crews were dispatched at about 10:35 a.m. to the 13900 block of McCutcheon Road E after reports of a helicopter crash. Firefighters arrived to find the helicopter had come down in a parking lot and was leaking fuel.

The pilot, the only person aboard, was pulled from the wreckage by firefighters. He suffered moderate, non-life-threatening injuries, was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to a local hospital.

Crews contained the fuel spill and secured the area around the crash site to allow investigators to examine the wreckage.

Initial reports indicate the helicopter may have experienced an engine failure, resulting in a hard landing in the parking lot. The aircraft was reportedly being used in tree harvesting operations at a nearby tree farm.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The crash highlights the risks of low-altitude helicopter work in the region's timber operations, where aircraft are used to move logs and equipment in terrain that can be difficult to access. Federal investigators will determine whether mechanical failure, operational factors or other causes contributed to the incident.
