Palo Alto plans 12-hour overnight parking ban near housing areas
New signs will bar overnight parking for RVs and other large vehicles on streets within 100 feet of residential and mixed-use areas. The City Council is expected to revisit how that distance is measured in two weeks.
Palo Alto plans to expand overnight parking restrictions for recreational vehicles and other large vehicles, with new signs marking areas where parking will be prohibited from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The restriction applies to streets within 100 feet of residential areas, including sites zoned for housing and mixed use.
The 12-hour overnight window doubles the hours during which parking is restricted. The city has been working to limit RV and large-vehicle parking on public streets and estimates that about 150 RVs are being used as homes on city streets.
The 100-foot boundary remains under discussion. Councilmember Ed Lauing said the distance raises practical questions about how it should be measured and how the rule could affect different neighborhoods.
The council is scheduled to return to the issue in two weeks. The city has not specified when the new signs will be installed.
