Man killed in early-morning I-280 collision near Geneva Avenue; CHP seeks driver
A man died after being struck on I-280 near Geneva Avenue early Thursday, and the driver left a Toyota Prius at the scene and fled, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating the crash as a felony hit-and-run and is asking witnesses to come forward.
A man was killed early Thursday after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 280 near Geneva Avenue in San Francisco, and the driver fled, the California Highway Patrol said.
Dispatchers received a report of a pedestrian in the freeway’s center median at about 2:25 a.m. Officers found the man and a nearby Toyota Prius that had been left behind. Firefighters pronounced him dead a few minutes later, CHP Officer Mark Andrews said.
The victim had not been identified, and authorities had not said why he was on the freeway. The CHP is investigating the collision as a felony hit-and-run and searching for the driver.
San Francisco police tried to locate the Prius’s registered owner. A CHP log says an officer spoke with a family member of the owner, who told police the driver had admitted to hitting a pedestrian and was “scared.” San Francisco police used a drone during the search, believing the driver might still be nearby.
All lanes were diverted at the 19th Avenue off-ramp while officers investigated. WalkSF, a pedestrian-safety organization, reported 14 other pedestrian deaths in San Francisco this year.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call the CHP’s San Francisco office at 415-276-5300.
