CHP investigates homicide after Oakland woman’s remains found near I-580

The remains of Bailey Kristin Barnett, a 22-year-old Oakland woman, were found beneath Interstate 580 near Hollis Street on July 27, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol is investigating her death as a homicide.

The discovery was made near the Oakland-Emeryville border, close to the MacArthur Maze, during an unrelated call for service, according to the CHP. Barnett’s remains were badly burned, and investigators used DNA testing to identify her. Authorities have not publicly released her cause of death.

Barnett had been staying at a transitional home in Oakland after previously living at a single-room-occupancy hotel near Lake Merritt. Her last known contact with anyone was July 22, five days before her remains were discovered.

Investigators are following several leads, including text messages on Barnett’s phone from a man she apparently had recently met. One message, sent on the day she went missing, said, “How are you its the guy from yesterday,” according to information shared with Bay Area News Group. Authorities have not publicly named the man or said whether he is a suspect.

The CHP confirmed it is leading the investigation but said it could not provide further details while the case remains active. Anyone with information is asked to call the agency’s tip line at 707-917-4491.
