Bollinger Road Safeway in San Jose set to close around Nov. 13

A Safeway on Bollinger Road in San Jose is scheduled to close permanently on or around Nov. 13, ending 57 years of service to the neighborhood, the company confirmed Oct. 20.

The store is at 6150 Bollinger Road. Safeway did not provide a reason for the closure.

The supermarket has served more than a retail role for some nearby middle and high school students. Students have gathered there during minimum school days, and alternate diploma programs have used trips to the store to help students practice life skills such as locating products and paying at checkout.

The closure adds to a series of Bay Area Safeway shutdowns in recent years. Other locations have closed in Pinole, Hayward, Vallejo and San Francisco.

Safeway has also pursued mixed-use housing redevelopment proposals at several Bay Area properties with developer Align Real Estate. Separately, a July investigation found that long-term vacancies at some California supermarket buildings were linked to the company’s practice of keeping properties empty or using lease restrictions that prevent grocery sales. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation in September aimed at limiting that practice.
