A storm moving south from Alaska could bring showers from Tuesday evening through Thursday, with the heaviest totals expected south of the North Bay. Cooler weather will replace the region’s recent spell of heat and sunshine.

Bay Area forecast calls for up to a half-inch of rain as temperatures drop

Rain and cooler temperatures are expected across the Bay Area this week after an unusually warm, sunny stretch, with showers likely to begin Tuesday afternoon or evening and continue through Thursday.

The National Weather Service forecast up to half an inch of rain across much of the region from Tuesday night through Thursday. The North Bay could receive up to a quarter-inch, while parts of Monterey and San Benito counties could see as much as an inch. Brief periods of heavier rain are possible in San Francisco, Oakland and the Peninsula hills.

The storm is moving south from Alaska over warm ocean water. If it develops as forecast, it could bring the region its heaviest rainfall since April.

Temperatures are also set to fall. San Francisco highs are forecast in the low 60s through the first half of the week, while Santa Rosa and Livermore are expected to remain below 70 degrees. The change follows a recent heat spell that pushed downtown San Francisco above 80 degrees late last week.

Rain is expected to keep inland areas cool Wednesday and Thursday. As the region dries out, daytime highs farther inland could climb back into the 70s Friday and Saturday, while coastal locations may remain in the 60s.
