Providence councilors propose citywide ban on license plate readers
Three City Council members are introducing an ordinance to ban and deactivate license plate readers across Providence. The proposal would put the technology’s future before the next mayor decides whether to renew the city’s contract with Flock.
Three Providence City Council members plan to introduce an ordinance banning all license plate readers in the city, putting the future of the technology before the next mayor decides whether to renew or cancel Providence’s contract with Flock.
Councilors Rachel Miller, Miguel Sanchez and Sue AnderBois are sponsoring the proposal, which would also deactivate the city’s existing readers. The council is expected to consider the measure, but it has not been enacted.
Automatic license plate readers have been a subject of debate during the recent mayoral election season, drawing both criticism and support. The proposed ban would establish the city’s policy on the technology through an ordinance rather than leave its continued use to a decision about the Flock contract.
