Foxborough Troop 32 raises more than $2,000 after firewood stand collects just $1
After scouts’ honor-system firewood sale at the Community Farm Stand brought in only a dollar, local residents responded to a social media appeal with more than $2,000. The donations will help cover troop expenses and fund its next outing.
Foxborough Scout Troop 32 raised more than $2,000 from community members after its honor-system firewood fundraiser at the Community Farm Stand brought in just $1.
The troop had restarted the longtime fundraiser for the first time in several years, with scouts chopping and bundling firewood to pay for operational costs, trips and other expenses. Customers could take the wood and leave a donation in a box beside the bundles.
Within days, the firewood was gone. When Scoutmaster Brian Compter and other leaders checked the box, they found only a dollar.
Compter said the result was disappointing after the scouts had put in the work to prepare and display the wood. But after word spread on social media, community members contributed more than $2,000 to the troop.
Compter called the response a lesson for the scouts, who learn the Scout Law and Scout Oath values of being trustworthy and helpful. The funds will allow the troop to buy what it needs for its next adventure.
