Oregon Rep. Paul Evans pleads not guilty after DUII arrest in Independence
Oregon state Rep. Paul Evans was arrested early Sunday in Independence on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and failing to perform the duties of a driver, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty Monday in Polk County Circuit Court. A probable-cause affidavit says police were notified of a Jeep matching Evans’ vehicle striking a stop sign at an intersection. At about 1:45 a.m., an officer followed Evans as he pulled into a 7-Eleven parking lot, the affidavit says. A breath test at 4:07 a.m. recorded Evans’ blood alcohol concentration at 0.16%, according to the affidavit. Evans told an officer he had consumed three drinks over eight hours at the Elks Lodge, with alcohol in the first two, the document says. In a statement released through a spokesperson Monday, Evans said he took “full responsibility” and regretted letting down his community. He said he has struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and used alcohol to cope, and that he is seeking inpatient treatment. Under a pretrial release agreement, Evans may leave Oregon for treatment from Oct. 9 through Nov. 23. That period includes Election Day. Evans, a Democrat from Monmouth, is expected to win a seventh term in the Oregon House, according to the report. A judge ordered him not to use intoxicants or enter liquor stores or bars while released. Evans is scheduled to return to court Oct. 28. The charges are allegations, and the case remains pending.
