Kotek’s 2026 reelection interview puts Oregon education system in focus

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek discussed her record, plans for a possible second term and the state’s struggling education system in a 35-minute interview released Oct. 15, less than three weeks before voters decide whether to reelect her.

Kotek, a Democrat, is facing Republican state Sen. Christine Drazan in a rematch of the 2022 governor’s race. Election Day is Nov. 3.

Education policy has featured prominently in the campaign. Kotek and Drazan recently gave separate interviews addressing the race’s major issues, including the state’s education system. The interview with Kotek was released as a full episode of a political podcast.

The interview announcement said the conversation covered Kotek’s gubernatorial record and what she would pursue in a second term, but did not provide details of her answers or specific education proposals. Those details matter to Oregon families and school communities grappling with the state’s education challenges as they assess the candidates’ plans.

Kotek and Drazan also met for their final debate in Bend on Oct. 13, with discussion touching on issues specific to Central and Eastern Oregon.
