Man hospitalized after Ashland police shooting near damaged A Street businesses
An Ashland officer shot a man early Oct. 26 after police responding to a business alarm encountered him near shattered storefronts, authorities said. The man was taken to a Medford hospital; the district attorney’s office plans to present the investigation to a grand jury.
A man was hospitalized after an Ashland police officer shot him early Monday, Oct. 26, near downtown businesses with shattered windows, the Ashland Police Department said.
Officers responding to a business alarm encountered the man as he was leaving the 200 block of A Street, police said. Authorities said he approached officers with a knife before one officer fired. The man was taken to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.
Police had not publicly identified the man or the officer. Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara said the man was white and in his 30s.
Broken glass and caution tape remained at the scene Monday morning. Businesses with damage included Masala Bistro & Bar and A Street Print and Parcel.
Jackson County District Attorney Patrick Green said his office will present the findings of the investigation to a grand jury, a standard step after a police shooting. Authorities expected to release more information later in the week.
The shooting occurred near a memorial marking the spot where Ashland resident Matthew Vandersande was shot and killed in his parked vehicle in September 2025. That homicide investigation remains ongoing.
