East Portland’s 82nd Avenue corridor set for more frequent cleaning
Multnomah County commissioners voted Thursday, Oct. 8, to spend $150,000 on expanded cleaning along 82nd Avenue in East Portland, where some areas are currently cleaned once a week and are expected to receive service three times weekly. The work will cover the corridor between Northeast Killingsworth Street and Southeast Harney Street. Services will include removing trash and discarded needles, with pressure-washing in some locations, according to a presentation to commissioners. Commissioner Julia Brim-Edwards proposed the funding during the county’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget process. She said East Portland has not received an equitable share of basic public services and described the cleaning as an effort to provide reliable upkeep for families, pedestrians, transit riders, businesses and residents. The county is coordinating with the City of Portland on the work. Both governments are partnering with Portland-based Junk It Junk Removal, which is also participating in workforce development with the nonprofit Trash for Peace. The program provides hands-on training for people seeking long-term employment, county leaders said. The investment comes as Portland’s Public Environment Management Office expands its sidewalk-cleaning service to more East Portland corridors. The county’s new funding adds a separate boost to cleaning frequency on a major neighborhood street.
