Cottage Grove’s 137-year-old weekly newspaper will publish its final edition Oct. 28
The Cottage Grove Sentinel says it will close after its Oct. 28 edition, citing a sharp decline in revenue. The newspaper’s shutdown ends more than a century of local publishing in the Lane County community.
The Cottage Grove Sentinel will cease operations after publishing its Oct. 28 edition, ending a run that began in 1889.
The weekly newspaper announced the closure in its Oct. 21 edition, saying a sharp decline in revenue led to the decision. Its owners had been considering a shutdown since April, but made a final effort to increase advertising before deciding to close.
The Sentinel has had several owners since 1990. It is owned by Salem-based Country Media, which also operates seven other Oregon newspapers, most of them serving coastal communities. Country Media did not respond to a request for comment.
The closure will remove a longstanding source of local reporting for Cottage Grove, a community south of Eugene. The announcement did not specify what will happen to the newspaper’s staff or whether its coverage will continue in another form.
