228 Roosters Seized in Large-Scale Cockfighting Operation in Deschutes County

DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — Law enforcement officials in Deschutes County have seized 228 roosters from a large-scale cockfighting operation near Redmond, according to authorities. The seizure, one of the largest of its kind in the region, has prompted an investigation into animal cruelty and illegal gambling activities.

The operation was discovered after a tip from a concerned citizen, leading deputies to a rural property where they found the birds housed in cramped and unsanitary conditions. Many of the roosters showed signs of injury consistent with fighting, including lacerations and missing feathers. Investigators also recovered equipment commonly used in cockfighting, such as gaffs, knives, and a fighting pit.

“This is a serious case of animal cruelty and illegal gambling that we are taking very seriously,” said a spokesperson for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. “We are working with animal welfare organizations to ensure the birds receive proper care and to hold those responsible accountable.”

The roosters have been transferred to an undisclosed location where they are being evaluated by veterinarians. Animal rescue groups are assisting with their care, though the sheer number of birds presents a significant challenge.

Cockfighting is illegal in Oregon and is considered a felony offense. It involves forcing roosters to fight, often to the death, for entertainment and gambling purposes. The practice is linked to other criminal activities, including drug trafficking and money laundering.

No arrests have been made yet, but authorities say charges are pending as the investigation continues. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the operation to come forward.

This seizure underscores the ongoing problem of illegal animal fighting in rural areas, where such operations can go undetected for extended periods. Local animal welfare advocates are calling for stronger enforcement and harsher penalties for those involved in cockfighting.

“We need to send a clear message that this barbaric practice will not be tolerated in our community,” said a representative from a regional animal protection group. “These animals suffer immensely, and we must do everything we can to prevent it.”

The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities continue to process the scene and interview potential witnesses.
