Trump urges Arkansas residents to press Cotton on year-round daylight saving time
President Donald Trump used a Saturday Truth Social post to push Sen. Tom Cotton to support the Sunshine Protection Act, and appeared to include the Arkansas Republican’s phone number. Cotton has argued that permanent daylight saving time would leave children, farmers and other early risers in darkness on winter mornings.
President Donald Trump renewed his campaign to make daylight saving time permanent Saturday, calling on Arkansas residents to contact Sen. Tom Cotton and urging the Republican to support the Sunshine Protection Act. Trump’s social media post appeared to include Cotton’s phone number.
Trump described Cotton as a friend but criticized him for opposing the measure. He called passage a potential bipartisan victory and said the change would benefit the country. The PGA Tour was among the reasons Trump highlighted in his pitch.
The proposal would end the twice-yearly clock changes and keep the country on daylight saving time throughout the year, preserving later evening sunsets but shifting winter sunrises later as well.
Cotton has long opposed making daylight saving time permanent, arguing that darker winter mornings would affect children, farmers and others who start their days early. Trump has pressed Senate Republicans on the issue for months, but the post did not change the underlying dispute over how a permanent time shift would affect people’s daily routines.
