President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking energy infrastructure, but gave no terms and Kyiv said strikes continued. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to halt its own attacks if Russia did the same.

Trump Announces Immediate Halt on Energy Strikes, but Ukraine Reports New Russian Attacks
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate “energy ceasefire,” but offered no details about its terms or how compliance would be verified. Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks on energy infrastructure continued after Trump’s announcement, leaving the status of any agreement uncertain. Trump’s brief social media post said the halt took effect immediately and warned, “Do not break it!” Moscow had not publicly commented by Sunday evening. Zelenskyy called the announcement “good news for everyone,” but said Russian drones and glide bombs were still hitting Ukraine. A power plant in Kharkiv was attacked Sunday evening, his office confirmed, after Trump’s post. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was “ready to refrain from striking Russian energy infrastructure” and expected Russia to show the same willingness. The exchange came as Russia’s full-scale invasion entered its fifth year and both sides continued long-range aerial attacks. Ukrainian officials say Russian strikes on energy facilities threaten electricity, heating and water supplies for civilians, a concern that grows as winter approaches. In an interview broadcast earlier Sunday, Zelenskyy said Kyiv would stop striking Russian refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukraine’s energy system. He urged Trump to press the Kremlin to agree. Trump had announced a similar proposal on Sept. 14, saying both countries had agreed not to hit each other’s energy infrastructure; no details followed, and the proposal did not lead to a halt in attacks. Trump has recently criticized Zelenskyy over the war and urged Ukraine to stop targeting Russian energy infrastructure. On Saturday, Trump said Ukraine should choose a new president. Zelenskyy responded that Ukraine could hold elections after a 60-day ceasefire, while noting that martial law and security risks prevent a vote during the ongoing war.
