WAUSAU, Wis. — U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, and a pilot were rescued Saturday night after their small plane lost power and made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau, authorities said. The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. as Tiffany and pilot Leonard Boltz approached Wausau Downtown Airport. Tiffany said they were returning from a Lincoln Day Dinner in La Crosse County when the aircraft experienced the mechanical problem. The single-engine, four-seat Beechcraft Bonanza entered the water during the emergency landing. Tiffany and Boltz escaped as the plane began to sink, then swam toward shallow water and called 911, according to Tiffany and the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office. Fire department responders reached the men by airboat shortly after 9 p.m. Both were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries. Authorities placed a no-wake buoy near the submerged aircraft and asked boaters to stay away from the area until the plane can be removed. The FAA and NTSB have been notified and are expected to examine what caused the loss of power and how the landing unfolded. Tiffany, a Republican congressman, is running for governor and has received an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Democratic nominee David Crowley offered Tiffany well wishes and praised Boltz for his actions during the emergency.
