Thune presses Trump to help fund Republican Senate campaigns
LE SUEUR, Minn. — Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he is pressing President Donald Trump and the president’s political team to direct more campaign resources toward Republican candidates as the 2026 midterms approach. In an interview Monday during a Midwest campaign swing, the South Dakota Republican said resources had been a recurring topic in recent conversations with Trump, including a visit to the White House. Thune said some states have become expensive to contest and that candidates need adequate financial support. “I think the president is sincerely interested in trying to do whatever he can to help the team,” Thune said. He added that he had emphasized “the importance of ensuring that our candidates are well-resourced.” Thune spoke in Le Sueur on Oct. 5 while campaigning with Michele Tafoya, a Republican Senate candidate. The appearance came as Trump focuses on mobilizing his supporters through a series of pre-election rallies, while Thune is urging attention to the money needed to compete in key states. Thune did not identify specific states or provide fundraising targets in the comments. His remarks underscore the role of campaign spending in the contest for control of the Senate, where party leaders and candidates rely on donations and outside political groups to reach voters.
