WASHINGTON — Latino Democratic officials are pressing Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear to direct more Democratic Governors Association attention and resources toward Texas, where Democrat Gina Hinojosa is seeking to unseat Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. The campaign is part of an effort by Latino operatives, local officials and congressional leaders to persuade Beshear that Texas should be included in the party’s 2026 gubernatorial strategy. Beshear is chair of the Democratic Governors Association, which is also focused on governor’s races in states including Michigan, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada. The Texas contest has taken on added importance for Democrats as the party works to rebuild support among Latino voters. Texas has been a central battleground in that struggle, with Democrats seeking to reverse recent losses among a constituency that has long been a key part of the party’s electoral coalition. Sergio Gonzalez, a Democratic operative involved in recruiting DGA support for Hinojosa and other Latino candidates, said the party needs a more ambitious strategy after the 2024 election. “One takeaway from 2024 is that Democrats writ large need to be a whole lot more bold when it comes to their approach, their strategy, their thinking,” Gonzalez said. He described Hinojosa’s campaign as part of the broader work of building a coalition capable of winning statewide. Beshear said Hinojosa is a strong candidate but did not announce a specific expansion of DGA support in Texas. “Gina Hinojosa is a great candidate and running a great campaign,” Beshear said in a statement. The pressure comes as Democrats weigh whether to concentrate resources in states viewed as more immediately competitive or to broaden the map to include Texas. For Latino leaders, the Texas race is both an opportunity to challenge Abbott and a test of whether national Democrats will make sustained investments in Latino communities and candidates.
