South Korea says Alaska gas pipeline investment remains under review
South Korean officials said Thursday that no investment in Alaska’s long-stalled natural gas pipeline has been finalized, a day after President Donald Trump promoted Korean backing at the White House. Trump praised Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan in the announcement, but the project’s financing remains unsettled.
South Korea has not finalized an investment in a proposed Alaska natural gas pipeline, its government said Thursday, contradicting the impression of secured Korean funding President Donald Trump gave at the White House a day earlier.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and other government officials said the investment remains conditional and under review. Their statements came less than 24 hours after Trump discussed the project alongside Sen. Dan Sullivan, an Alaska Republican who has advocated for the pipeline.
“This is a great senator, who is totally responsible for this pipeline,” Trump said Wednesday, praising Sullivan as a close partner. The White House appearance highlighted Korean funding, but South Korea’s response made clear that no commitment had been finalized.
The proposed natural gas project has been stalled for years. Without confirmed financing from South Korea, a key element of the public funding picture remains unresolved. No investment amount or timetable was specified in the statements described Thursday.
