Rubio announces U.S. sanctions targeting International Criminal Court
The Trump administration is imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday, escalating its campaign against the tribunal based in The Hague, Netherlands. In a video posted to social media, Rubio said the United States would prohibit transactions with the court. He said the restrictions were intended to cut off resources and limit the ICC’s ability to act against the United States. “Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC,” Rubio said. The announcement came hours after Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a former ICC judge, was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The timing links two developments involving the court, but Rubio did not cite the prize as a reason for the sanctions. The administration did not provide further details in its announcement about how the restrictions would be implemented or which transactions would be affected.
