Jim Copenhaver, who was wounded in the July 13, 2024, shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital. He was 76. The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said the cause of death is under investigation. Copenhaver had spent more than two years dealing with injuries from the attack, in which he was shot twice while attending the rally with family members. One bullet struck his bicep; another lodged near his spine and caused nerve damage. He underwent multiple surgeries and, according to a lawsuit he filed against the federal government in June, faced the prospect of further operations. After the shooting, he used a cane, attended physical therapy and experienced numbness in his left leg. The attack killed Corey Comperatore, a firefighter in the crowd, and wounded Copenhaver, another spectator and then-candidate Trump. The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents. Trump called Copenhaver’s death a “tremendous loss” in a Thursday post on Truth Social, praising his perseverance after he was hurt while protecting his family. House Republicans also expressed condolences in a social media post. Copenhaver described the continuing pain as a daily struggle in a 2024 interview on the TODAY show. His death comes as the circumstances surrounding the shooting—and its lasting effects on survivors and families—remain part of the community’s public record.
