Huckabee warns U.S. Gaza coordination hub may lack staff and resources

A cable signed by U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee questions whether the Board of Peace and the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem can take on the work needed to support Gaza’s disarmament and reconstruction. The concern centers on a planned Pentagon drawdown and uncertainty over who will replace military personnel at a key coordination center.

Huckabee warns U.S. Gaza coordination hub may lack staff and resources

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has warned senior State Department officials that the staffing and resources needed to carry out President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan remain uncertain, according to a diplomatic cable sent Thursday, Oct. 22.

The cable, signed by Huckabee, raises questions about whether the Board of Peace and the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem can support plans to disarm and rebuild Gaza. It focuses on the International Gaza Support Center, a hub intended to coordinate work among the United States, Israel and international partners.

The Pentagon is expected to reduce its personnel at the center over the next year. The current plan calls for civilians to take over those positions, but the cable says it is not clear whether the Board of Peace can staff all of the center’s functions.

“Embassy Jerusalem is not currently staffed to assume these roles, but can be if it has an idea of the human, financial and logistical resources that will be needed,” Huckabee wrote. He added that the Board of Peace was working to expand its staff, while its ability to cover every function at the center remained unclear.

The concerns point to a practical challenge for the administration’s plans: coordinating disarmament and reconstruction will require people, funding and logistical support, even as the U.S. military presence at the hub is scheduled to shrink. The cable does not specify how many additional staff or what level of funding would be needed.

Huckabee’s message asks for clearer planning from the U.S. government as the transition from military to civilian staffing approaches.
