Federal judge keeps Trump administration promotional ads on hold
A federal judge on Wednesday extended a temporary order blocking the Trump administration from distributing ads promoting President Donald Trump and his second term, after advocacy groups said the ads continued to air despite an earlier court order. U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon issued the extension in Washington. She first ordered the ads halted on Sunday. The White House posted additional ads on its official YouTube page on Monday, raising questions about whether the administration had complied with the ruling. A coalition of organizations represented by the Campaign Legal Center told the court that the ads had also run in nearly 400 television spots. In a letter filed Wednesday, the groups said that by 2:45 p.m. Monday, one ad had aired 20 times, a second had aired 11 times and a third had aired once. They said those broadcasts took place after Rochon’s initial order was in effect. “We are very pleased that the court extended the temporary restraining order,” said Renata O’Donnell, the center’s senior legal counsel for strategic litigation. She said the extension would keep the ads off the air and prevent further distribution, describing them as “plainly illegal.” Critics have compared the government-funded promotions to campaign material. The extension keeps the temporary restriction in place while the legal dispute continues; it does not, by itself, resolve the underlying claims.
