Facebook Pages face new monthly caps on free link posts
Meta is limiting Facebook Pages to two posts with hyperlinks a month unless they subscribe to plans costing $49.99 or $499 monthly. The change puts a price on directing audiences to information beyond the platform, including news and community resources.
Meta is placing a monthly limit on how many hyperlinks Facebook Pages can share for free, requiring page operators to subscribe if they want to post more links in posts or reels.
Under the new limits, Pages can include two hyperlinks per month without paying. Meta’s One Advanced plan, priced at $49.99 a month, raises the limit to eight; a $499 monthly Max plan allows unlimited hyperlinks, according to details shared about the change.
The policy could affect organizations that use Facebook to send followers to material elsewhere online, from news reports and public-service information to businesses’ own websites. The change makes that ability dependent on a paid subscription, though the available details do not specify how many Pages are affected or whether the limits apply uniformly.
Social platforms have a financial incentive to keep users browsing within their services. David Evans, managing director at consulting firm BRG, has described the model this way: platforms use content to hold consumers’ attention and sell advertisers access to that audience.
The new restriction drew criticism from game designer Ashley Gullen, who said on Mastodon that Facebook was reaching “absurd new heights” of enshittification. The policy also echoes concerns about how social networks handle links to outside websites. A Nieman Lab analysis has found that links can hurt news publishers’ performance on X, though that research concerns a different platform and does not establish how Facebook’s new limits will affect publishers.
For local newsrooms, civic groups and other Page operators, the practical question is whether reaching audiences through Facebook will increasingly require paying the company—or finding other ways to distribute links. Meta’s pricing structure leaves Pages with a sharp jump from two free hyperlinks a month to a paid plan.
