USPS says Phoenix-area facilities can handle local election mail
Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap warned that mail voting would be slower this fall and blamed a postal facility closure. The U.S. Postal Service said no Phoenix-area processing facilities have closed and that it has enough capacity for local election mail.
The U.S. Postal Service disputed Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap’s warning that mail-in voting would be slower this fall because of a postal facility closure, saying Phoenix-area processing facilities remain open and can handle election mail volume.
“ The Postal Service has not closed any Phoenix-area processing facilities and has more than enough capacity to successfully process local Election Mail volume,” USPS spokesperson Sherry Patterson said in an email.
Heap had attributed a projected slowdown in mail voting to the closure. The USPS statement, issued Oct. 6, directly challenged that explanation but did not provide further details about Heap’s claim or election-mail processing timelines.
