Federal agents move against months-long camp guarding San Rafael Valley cottonwood
U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested about 18 people on Oct. 5 and 6 near a protest camp in Lochiel, where activists had spent more than two months opposing construction of a double border wall in the San Rafael Valley. Armed federal agents raided the camp in the early hours of Oct. 5. The site is about 25 miles east of Nogales and near a century-old cottonwood tree that protesters sought to protect from the wall construction. The arrests followed a sustained vigil by activists around the tree. No details were provided about the protesters’ identities, possible charges or whether they remained in custody.
