Yuma father asks city to seek independent review of son’s fatal 2025 case

A year after 17-year-old Milo Figueroa was killed in a Yuma road confrontation, his father is asking city officials to seek an independent review of the case against his older son, who is charged in the death.

Police say Juan Figueroa, 19, ran over his younger brother during an incident on Sept. 13, 2025. The brothers were in the same car and became involved in a confrontation with a 36-year-old man in another vehicle at about 8 p.m., according to police. Juan has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge alleging he intended or knew his actions would cause death. He is out on bond while awaiting trial.

Joseph Figueroa has asked the Yuma City Council, the Arizona attorney general and others to re-examine the investigation. He says he believes police did not fully investigate what happened and maintains that his older son’s actions were accidental. No details have been announced about how a review ordered by the council would proceed.

The father described being caught between grief for Milo and concern for Juan, saying he believes his older son should have kept his younger brother safe. A memorial for Milo remains at the site of the incident.

Joseph said the cost of Juan’s legal defense has left the family in limbo and prevented him from arranging what he considers a proper funeral for Milo. Juan is expected in court next month.
